South West Water have invested in three remote controlled grass mowers, which will allow for the better health and safety of employees maintaining steep slopes and grassy banks.

The machines, manufactured by Gloucestershire firm McMurtry, will be used by SWW’s grounds care team when mowing grass on slopes around assets such as storage tanks and pipelines. Running with hybrid power of both a petrol engine and an electric motor, they can be operated at a distance of up to 100m by an operative using remote control pack.

The environmentally-efficient mowers can track up to 500 meters without starting the petrol engine, while electrical drive transmissions give them the ability to turn with very little ground tear effect; they are also sturdy enough to handle light brush and foliage.

South West Water are the first to use the equipment in the water sector, and the application follows extensive trials. Slopes of over 10 degrees can cause a conventional walk-behind or ride-on mower to slide or roll, and the remote controlled mowers are seen as a way of reducing this risk for the operator, while being more productive alternative to hand-held strimmers. Other benefits include the elimination of potential injuries caused by hand-arm vibration when using mowers and reduced noise levels.

South West Water’s grounds care team have received operator training on using the equipment direct from manufacturer McMurtry.
