New PISTA® VIO™System Improves Removal Efficiency Compared to WWTP’s Detritors

Part of a 2016 expansion project, the Elkhart Wastewater Treatment Plant improved its grit removal efficiency and wet weather capacity by installing PISTA® VIO™ Grit Chambers in existing detritor grit basins. Unlike the other technologies considered, the PISTA® VIO™ allowed utilisation of existing infrastructure in addition to providing improved efficiencies and capacities.

Part of a 2016 expansion project, the Elkhart Wastewater Treatment Plant improved its grit removal efficiency and wet weather capacity by installing PISTA® VIO™ Grit Chambers in existing detritor grit basins. Unlike the other technologies considered, the PISTA® VIO™ allowed utilisation of existing infrastructure in addition to providing improved efficiencies and capacities.

The two 75,700 cmd PISTA® VIO™ Grit Chambers were installed directly inside the plant’s existing detritor-type aerated grit chamber basins. Also utilising the existing influent/effluent channels, the system was arranged at a 270 degree angle per the plant layout.

The PISTA® VIO™ achieves this level of flexibility thanks to its ability to arrange connecting channels at any variable angle up to the full 360 degrees of the circular chamber. A proprietary new baffle system produces the hydraulic vortex flow path necessary to achieve the 95 percent grit removal rating (down to 100 microns).

Elkhart’s PISTA® VIO™ chamber internals were made of 304 stainless steel, pre-constructed and shipped directly to the jobsite. New construction and concrete costs related to the project were minimal compared to the alternative grit systems considered. S&L also provided new accompanying grit conveying, concentration and PLC control systems for the project.

Grit removal efficiency testing conducted later in the year revealed the systems are FAR exceeding even their stated performance – removing 99% of ALL grit (including the finest of grit particles down to 100 mircon).
