Multi Phase Extraction (MPE) to remove volatile hydrocarbons from soil and groundwater at an operational chemical facility in Italy.

Ecologia has successfully completed the installation and commissioning of the next phase of remediation works at a chemical facility in Castiglione, Italy following the initial installation of a multiphase extraction system (MPE) as part of emergency containment measures in 2009.

The initial system has prevented any further residual contamination migrating off site and it has removed in excess of 15 tonnes of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) since its installation in 2009.

The newly commissioned system is addressing part of the contamination plume which has migrated off site beneath a residential area.

The site has presented some significant logistical and technical challenges, demanding a variety of design and research solutions to be implemented both at a live facility, and on third party land. The principal contaminants are low molecular hydrocarbons which are both volatile and relatively soluble, meaning that both the soil and groundwater require treatment.

The ground beneath the site is made up of glacial outwash as well as alluvial sands and gravels and is therefore a poorly sorted mix of gravels, sands and larger stones and cobbles. The heterogeneity of the ground additionally presents difficulty for the design of in-situ remediation systems, which are normally best suited for fairly homogeneous ground. The presence of heterogeneous material beneath the site prompted the investigation of a variety of technologies to solve the problem.

Following evaluation MPE was chosen for this site because it can remove liquids and vapour from the subsurface utilising the same extraction well and thus affect both the unsaturated and saturated zones of contamination. The installation of the extraction wells was carefully monitored in order to ensure the maximum efficacy of the MPE design.

In addition to the high vacuum MPE, a pump and treat system, coupled with an air sparging system for a deeper section of the aquifer, is also in operation at the site.

The equipment was fully designed and built at our workshops in Kent, including the manufacture of the control panel and telemetry system as well as the design and manufacture of the automated total volatile organic compound (TVOC) detection device. The telemetry system allows the equipment to be monitored from the UK on a daily basis, to ensure that a rapid response can be organised in the event of a breakdown.

The site represents an example of how multiple technologies can be brought into play on a contaminated site with sufficient planning and involvement of contractors and consultants, whilst achieving good results of clean-up at an active facility.
