Managed Subcontract Drilling and Installation of Inclinometers, with Grouting of Sonic Tubes: Crossrail Farringdon Western Ticket Hall

Ecologia were approached to assist a geotechnical instrumentation specialist in the drilling and installation of a series of 36m, Casagrande piezometer tipped monitoring wells and a Tube a Manchette at the Crossrail Farringdon West Ticket Hall site.

In addition to drilling works, there was a significant amount of backfilling with pumped bentonite grout to be completed in pre-existing sonic testing holes, which had been cast into the secant walling around two large shafts being sunk within the site.

Because of the requirement to retrieve a full geological profile of the site, Ecologia engaged a subcontractor equipped with Geobore-S wireline coring tools to complete the drilling works, whilst acting in an overseeing role and covering the grouting works, in conjunction with subcontracted crews as required, running all work under the aegis of Ecologia's H&S and quality standards. Core recovery was excellent, even with the complication of gravel beds under the site.

Because of the compact nature of the site, and the need to remain highly mobile, Ecologia used a Weldgrip pump and mixer for the grouting, injecting to depth via 19mm OD disposable tremmie lines, allowing crews to rapidly move between holes with minimum downtime. This was critical to progress, since there were over 80 holes to backfill to depths up to 36m, including several inclinometers. All grouting was completed on schedule because of this approach.

Toward the end of grouting works, damage to a pre-existing inclinometer was identified within the secant pile wall. Unfortunately at this stage, the shaft had already been sunk to a depth of approximately 6m, preventing the use of a conventional drilling rig to clear the hole.

Thanks to Ecologia's careful risk assessment and innovative use of a Dando Terrier rotary head, anchored in place and appropriately guarded, it was possible to clear the hole and reinstall to 26m.
