Polypipe Ulster helps Northern Ireland Water achieve storm sewer technology first
Polypipe, the UK's leading manufacturer of plastic sustainable drainage and water management products, has helped deliver a unique drainage solution for Northern Ireland Water's Carrowreagh Storm Sewer Improvement Scheme in Dundonald, near Belfast.
An attenuation tank, created from Polypipe's market-leading Polystorm-R and Ridgistorm-XL products, forms an important feature of the £600,000 essential storm water improvement works, which are being carried out in response to flooding in a residential area and to meet future Rivers Agency standards.
Selected following a competitive tender process, Polypipe's technical team worked closely with Northern Ireland Water, specialist installers Charcon Construction Solutions and main contractor Graham Construction to devise a bespoke, easy-to-install modular storage tank to the exacting volumes required, complete with a number of two-part access chambers to aid future inspection of the structure.
It is the first time a sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) of this kind has been utilised by NI Water and was chosen for its ability to deliver more efficient environmentally friendly processes, and speed up the construction of the storm tank over more traditional materials.
The experts at Polypipe were able to create bespoke 900mm Ridgistorm-XL outlet pipes with 300mm connections to the storm tank, as an innovative, light weight alternative to existing concrete piping.
Keith Haslett, Head of Wastewater Networks Procurement at Northern Ireland Water commented: "The new modular storage tank is a unique sustainable drainage system and this is the first time this technology has been used by NI Water. The success of this pilot project has been greatly assisted by the experience of the water management specialists at Polypipe, NIW Consultant White Young and Green and our Framework Contractor Graham Construction, who have extensive experience of this type of sewer improvement work. Work is progressing very well and we anticipate the project will be completed by October 2012."
Harry Shields, Sales Director at Polypipe Ulster added: "The Carrowreagh Storm Sewer Improvement Scheme is a great example of the bespoke design solutions which can be achieved when manufacturers, consultant engineers and contractors work together from the early design stage and we are delighted to have been selected for this project. Our in-house fabrications team were able to deliver a sustainable drainage system in line with the exact requirements of this development, with a number of bespoke features including the access units which provide surface level access for inspection activities".
The six month project will also reduce risk of flooding from the nearby Enler River.
