Hot news from Yorkshire - Yorkshire Water invests in BIOTHELYS® thermal hydrolysis at Esholt
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has been awarded a major contract to supply its BIOTHELYS® thermal hydrolysis technology at Yorkshire Water's Esholt WwTW.
The Esholt works has operated a sewage sludge incinerator for many years, but Yorkshire Water is adopting a more sustainable route for sludge treatment and disposal. The Esholt Bioenergy Project is being engineered and delivered by Yorkshire Water's AMP5 Capital Delivery Partner: Morgan - Grontmij Joint Venture.
The thermal hydrolysis process breaks down the structure of sewage sludge prior to anaerobic digestion resulting in a significantly increased biogas yield. At Esholt this biogas is fed to a combined heat and power (CHP) plant to produce "green" electricity and heat. The electricity is fed into the grid to earn Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) for Yorkshire Water as part of their commitment to reduce Carbon footprint, and the waste heat is re-used by the process.
The increased biogas which is produced using BIOTHELYS® is due to a greater quantity of sludge being destroyed by the anaerobic digestion process which results in a smaller amount of sludge left for final disposal. It also produces a sludge which is pasteurised, and classified as an "Enhanced Treated Sludge" under the ADAS Safe Sludge Matrix, so can therefore be directly applied as a fertiliser/soil conditioner for all crops.
The Esholt plant, due for completion in 2013, will be the largest so far with a design sludge throughput of 30,000 tonnes of dry solids per year. Digestion will generate sufficient biogas to run a 4.4 MW combined heat and power plant producing approx. 33GW of electricity per year.
