Training for Success in EMS Auditing

Atkins has developed and delivered a range of practically focused IEMA accredited environmental auditing and EMS development courses.

The courses are aimed at equipping delegates with all the skills and competences they need to successfully develop, implement, maintain and audit an environmental management system which delivers tangible and continual improvements in environmental performance.

Auditing is vital to ensure continual improvement in any environmental management system. In the case of the standards BS EN ISO 14001 (2004) or EMAS, auditing will confirm whether or not the arrangements in place within an organisation, for example the manuals, procedures and improvement programmes, conform to the requirements of the standard and, importantly, relevant environmental legislation. Auditing will also demonstrate that the arrangements are being implemented and maintained and highlight areas for improvement.

To deliver the audit programme an audit procedure should be developed. The procedure should define roles and responsibilities for planning and conducting audits and set criteria for audit execution and reporting.

Ensuring that auditors are trained and equipped with the appropriate knowledge, competences and tools is key to delivering an audit process that delivers results and improvements to an organisation. In order to meet their obligations, auditors need have a clear understanding of audit process and procedure, and need to be trained and practised in a range of practical skills including:

·Interviewing techniques
·Document review
·Note taking
·Sampling
·Report writing and feedback.

Our team of highly experienced trainers have successfully delivered courses which in turn have delivered results to a range of public and private sector clients in the UK and overseas.
