Newbiggin Bay project in running for prestigious industry awards
Newbiggin Bay coastal protection scheme - for which Atkins was lead consultant - has been shortlisted for two British Construction Industry Awards 2008.
The project - shortlisted in the Civil Engineering Project and the Prime Minister's Better Public Buildings categories - restored the town's beach both as a coastal protection structure and a tourist destination, and was central to the wider regeneration of Newbiggin Bay. Its success demonstrates the impact civil engineering can have on a local community.
The scheme not only brought together the skills and disciplines of several organisations, led by Atkins, it also captured the imagination of everyone in the town and helped put Newbiggin on the map with its offshore artwork attracting national news coverage.
The project involved the design and construction of a 200m breakwater that is home to the UK's first offshore piece of artwork- The Couple. The breakwater will also bring improved flood and erosion protection to local communities. Wider regeneration benefits include the creation of a newly formed 300,000m3 beach, bringing recreational benefits to Newbiggin.
The BCI Awards are widely regarded as the industry's 'Oscars'. They are the most rigorously judged awards in the construction sector with all short listed projects visited by members of the judging panel.
The winner will be announced on the 8th October at a gala dinner attended by around 900 senior members of the construction industry.
