New approaches to environmental due diligence

Atkins has created a new approach to environmental due diligence reporting for clients such as international investment banks.

As a 24-hour operation, investment banks rarely have time to take a break. When we approached them to determine what they need from their advisors, we realised that another approach to giving advice, more suited to the client, was needed. They and their corporate clients work in a world of figures, valuations, returns and strategy, yet traditional environmental consulting advice has been very much focused on providing literary information, often quite long in nature.

Atkins developed an entirely new approach. The method not only clearly captures the key information that the client needs for financial modelling and valuation, but also provides valuable insight into key business issues for their corporate clients, from an environmental but commercialised perspective.

In practice, the format allows users to input information (that would otherwise have been quite descriptive) into Excel via dropdown menus and lists. This automatically converts to a series of summary tables and graphs, instantly giving the user relevant information on how the intended target business is performing, where any liabilities or costs will arise and when.

Not only are banks and their clients able to use the outputs more effectively, but the whole process significantly cuts down our reporting time, enabling us to be more time-efficient and at the same time still deliver a cutting edge service.

Our position in the environmental due diligence market has further been recognised by a leading European bank that recently took part in the newly created UK Environmental Law Association's (UKELA) Corporate Due Diligence Working Party.

This has been set up to provide both practitioners and users of environmental due diligence services with a means of staying informed of leading edge issues in the market place.
