Atkins wins prestigious Business Achievement IT Award
Atkins has won the prestigious Business Achievement IT Award from the Environmental Business Journal Awards 2005. This was awarded to the Contaminated Land Solutions team for their innovative waste soil classification tool.
Submitted in December, Atkins' work on waste classification through CAT-WASTE Soil was selected out of hundreds of entries from companies across the globe.
Atkins, working in partnership with J. McArdle Environmental, has developed a vital on-line tool helping organisations cope with the implementation of the Landfill Directive (2005). This Directive has fundamental implications for every organisation connected to the production, transport and disposal of waste. Prices for hazardous waste disposal have increased by up to 500% resulting in a critical business need for companies to classify wastes correctly and avoid the risks associated with non-hazardous wastes being expensively mis-classified as hazardous. Currently, the mis-classification of hazardous or non-hazardous waste can result in substantial fines and/or prosecution.
Waste classification of soils has come to the forefront of industry discussion both due to the significant increase in brownfield regeneration as a result of government policy and the complexity of the classification process itself. Atkins understands the benefits of value engineering and best practice in this area and over the past few months had noted that risks to the regeneration and redevelopment sectors had increased significantly as a result of the new legislation. They identified that costs associated with waste classification should ideally be fully assessed at the project planning stage although user friendly tools to assist with such were not readily available on the market.
In developing CAT-WASTE Soil Atkins were aware that manually undertaking waste classification is a time consuming and costly exercise requiring the assessor to determine the risk phrases, hazard categories and thresholds for every single chemical constituent. Atkins estimates that to undertake a full manual categorisation, which has been fully audit checked, would take tens of man hours for a relatively small data set.
