MSE Hiller Ltd, Mobile and Separation Equipment (M&SE) specialise in the rental and sales of dewatering centrifuges into environmental applications within the water treatment and process industries. Effluents and sludges may be dewatered or thickened by use of either fixed or temporary installed mobile dewatering plants. Trial units are available for on site testing of applications and unit capacities range from 1 to 105 m3 per hour. The MSE Hiller range of decanter type centrifuges offer high performance sludge dewatering and thickening and there are over 5,600 units installed Worldwide. The centrifuges can be supplied with either hydraulic or electrical regenerative back drive capability for automatically adjusting the scroll speed to suit the solids loading of the feed. The hire service is available with or without process operatives and can be used for on site lagoon and pond clearances, digestor cleaning, seasonal peak loads/breakdown coverage etc. Mitsubishi rayon membrane systems can be offered for high efficiency separation and cleaning of effluents offering water re-use options to customers. MSE Hiller Success at Northumbrian Water Bran Sands

MSE Hiller have successfully supplied four Hiller Decapress model DP76-402 VAHY centrifuges and a complete spare rotating assembly via JN Bentleys to Northumbrian Water's Bran Sands sewage treatment works in Teesside as part of a project creating green energy from sludge at the 52 acre, Bran Sands site.

This was a part of the overall £33 million scheme which uses Advanced Anaerobic Digestion (AAD) to treat sludge from the wastewater treatment works, generating biogas which is used onsite in the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit.

The project used CAMBI thermal hydrolysis process (THP), using heat and pressure to break down cell walls increasing enzyme hydrolysis and therefore digestion rates. This leads to a 50% reduction in the volume of sludge produced and a significant increase in biogas quantity. The new plant generates some 4.7 MWe from biogas which is used to power the treatment process. Reliance on natural gas has been reduced to less than 1/10th of its former figures, aiding the path to become a self-sufficient plant.

Two of the centrifuges are used to pre thicken sludge prior to the THP plant providing a controlled discharge of cake at 18 % dry solids at flowrates of up to 100 m3/hr each. The HMR5000 control system and accurate hydraulic scroll drive enables the machine to counter for variances in feed dry solids and continuously optimises machine performance.

High Torque Hiller Hydraulic Drive System

Post THP the digested sludge is dewatered at flowrates of 35 to 70 m3/hr using two of the Hiller DP76-402VAHY centrifuges to a cake of > 30 % dry solids prior to disposal off site as a Class A bio solid with no detectable pathogens and as a valuable agricultural fertiliser.

Hiller discharged digested cake at 30-35% dry solids
