Sweetened milk NEMO® progressive cavity pump running 24/7

In ‘America’s Dairyland’, the State of Wisconsin, sits one of the largest manufacturers of frozen dairy mixes in the midwest and the largest of sweetened condensed milk in the entire country. In addition to its more common lines, it also produces a range of custom dairy blends that include acidified cloudifiers, alcohol cream liquor’s and other unique beverage formulations. Sweetened milk is a highly condensed mixture of milk and sugar, near the end of the manufacturing process where the material needs to be pumped out of two recreation coolers under vacuum, the duty become more arduous.

25 years ago, the site engineers installed a competitors pump but sadly the metal surfaces wore very rapidly. Over the years, alternative systems were installed, but have time and again proven to be less than satisfactory solutions. At the beginning of 2014, the dairy contacted NETZSCH and our engineers recommended using the NEMO® progressing cavity pump with a flexible shaft, because the design is free from crevices and dead spaces. It is often used in the production of foodstuff, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and chemical/ biochemical applications.

With no components that move against each other, the flexible rod eliminates mechanical damage or corrosion and with no wear concerns, no lubrication is required, so no product contamination.

The NETZSCH flexible rod is made from special steel and is designed for 10 million load changes. It has the inherent strength to transmit the required drive while still having the flexibility to withstand the eccentric motion of the rotor.

Since summer 2014, there have been two progressive cavity pumps running 24/7 on site with no maintenance or performance issues. There is a third unit kept as a spare in the event of failure, but after months of service, one pump was taken apart to inspect for stator or other wear – but none was found.
