Walo UK Limited are specialists in the field of Hydraulic Asphalt Engineering supplying Impermeable Lining Systems for the permanent sealing of Landfill Sites, Dams, Reservoirs, Canals, Sea Defences and Contaminated Land. Our Dense Asphaltic Concrete (DAC)lining system is a 'specifically designed stand-alone impermeable lining' for the bottom and side slope sealing of containment sites, designed to greatly improve on the basic 'EU Landfill Directive' conditions for permanently preventing pollution to soil and groundwater. DAC is flexible and extremely strong, manufactured locally and engineered on site under specific CQA procedures. The DAC barrier is generally engineered to a thickness of 14cm and to a coefficient of permeability better than 1 x 10-13 m/s (metres per second). The DAC lining system contains no mobile toxic compounds and is unaffected by all natural weather conditions. DAC is so strong it can be trafficked by rubber tyred vehicles without fear of damage. Walo Uk Limited, Westmill Landfill Site

The Westmill Landfill Site is located in Hertfordshire, UK .The landfill site is located in a working sand and gravel pit and the landfill site receives general municipal waste from the south eastern part of the UK including waste from the northern conurbations of London.

The site is situated on a chalk aquifer and therefore environmental considerations are of the utmost importance. As a consequence, the operator decided to use the most robust and reliable lining system available - dense asphaltic concrete.

In total, WALO has constructed 8 cells on the site between 2003 and 2010 using dense asphaltic concrete. In spring 2010 two cells totalling some 20,000 m2 were constructed. The lining system comprised of a 300 mm
mineral attenuation layer; a 200 mm sub-base material layer; a 60 mm asphaltic binder layer; a 80 mm dense asphaltic concrete layer and a mastic seal coat to the base, side slopes and bund areas. The works involved the hand placing of asphalt on 450m of intercell bund and the placing of asphalt by paver and winch on a 30m slope. Following completion of the asphaltic lining works, a leachate collection and removal system was installed
