Power generation solutions for the utilities industry Water industry Wastewater treatment processes include energy-intensive operations such as aeration and pumping. As the cost of energy rises and emphasis on renewable sources increases, local authorities are seeking solutions that can save money and meet their environmental obligations.

The energy efficiency of a wastewater treatment plant can be maximised through the use of anaerobic digestion (AD). The methane produced when sewage sludge is digested can be used to power a combined heat and power (CHP) generator, which in turn provides electricity for the site and the hot water that can be passed through a heat exchanger to assist the digestion process. This can eliminate the need to purchase fossil fuels for plant heating processes and significantly reduces costs.

Featuring electrical outputs from 400 to 4,300 kWe, the Cat CG range of generators from Finning can operate on gases of varying quality, including digester and sewage gas. The units are designed for maximum efficiency and provide a renewable energy solution for long-term savings.

Our extensive experience in working with water utility companies includes a full design, build, ownership and operation project on the biggest anaerobic digestion plant of its kind in the South of England. When operating at full capacity, the AD plant creates enough energy to power approximately 3,000 homes in the local area.
