ADAS Wins Sustainability Communication Award for Outstanding Campaign
ADAS, the UK's leading environmental and agricultural consultancy took home the award for the 'Best Sustainability Communications Campaign' at the prestigious Environment and Energy Awards 2010, earlier this week.
The awards, organised by SustainabilityLive!, were presented at a ceremony at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham and saw more than 300 entries this year showcasing the latest innovations in sustainable business practice.
ADAS won the 'Best Sustainability Communications Campaign' award for their programme built around 'One Planet Borrowed from Future Generations', designed to encourage stakeholders and staff to embrace ADAS' carbon reduction ethos.
The multi-faceted campaign included posting company emissions data on the intranet; introducing an online system to record business travel emissions; producing pocket guides highlighting ADAS' guiding principles in line with the WWF, developing a Corporate Social Responsibility newsletter and statement and producing collateral including global warming themed calendars and posters, all using sustainably sourced raw materials.
Richard Laverick, Director of Corporate Responsibility for ADAS, said:
"Winning this award is an affirmation to the hard work that has gone into creating and integrating this campaign over the last 18 months and how well all the staff at ADAS have embraced the ethos of sustainability".
"The campaign's audience was stakeholders and staff, but it was really focused on the latter because we want our organisation to be among the best in terms of developing a highly profitable and sustainable business. Too often internal sustainability measures are seen as a bolt on to business activity, but for it to be truly successful and effective it needs to be integrated into operations, and that's exactly what we've done to win this award."
One of the most notable implementations was ADAS' decision to publish in full its emissions data on the intranet for all staff to see. The aim was to consistently remind employees of their collective responsibility towards environmental improvement.
"We also created a '10 Principles of One Planet Living' pocket guide that was given to all ADAS employees, highlighting our strong environmental ethos based on the World Wildlife Fund's One Planet Living guiding principles," said Richard.
Additionally, the consultancy, which among other clients advises manufacturers on resource efficiency and sustainability measures, also introduced a business travel system to record the impact of work-related travel on the environment.
Richard added: "We've made great progress to improve our environmental performance and it's great to get recognised for our hard work so far, but there is still lots more to do and we're looking forward to tackling these challenges as a company."
"Many of our consultants work from home and are based all over the UK and Ireland. While this is great for reducing our office-based emissions there can be many business miles clocked getting from place to place. When each consultant logs their mileage to make a travel claim, the online programme helps us see what impact we are having and then we can aim to reduce our personal CO2 emissions.
For example, last year the climate impact of my business travel was 3,651kgs CO2e, a reduction from my figures the previous year which totalled 4,001 kgs CO2e. This system has not only worked for me but has proved thought provoking and informative for all of our staff.
