CDM - Monitoring & Reporting for Carbon Credits - Case Study Published

For successful CDM/carbon-credit projects, accurate, transparent and auditable data are essential. Geotech has just published a case study showing how it is done using currently approved monitoring methodologies combined with quality equipment, quality audit/control and good management practice.

The study shows the equipment and technology, necessary to successfully complete waste handling and disposal CDM projects, is transferable to developing countries. The study is of a project is in Brazil which obtains certified emission reductions (CER) or carbon credits for a large scale, waste handling and disposal, clean development mechanism (CDM) project. Methane emissions are being reduced through collection and destruction of landfill gas (LFG).
There are two sites, both near Rio de Janeiro. One is a closed landfill site that has approximately two million tonnes of waste in place. The other is currently accepting 1,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily and is designed to take up to 3,000 tonnes a day. Both sites have been approved for installation of a gas collection system, leachate drainage system, modular electric generation plant and flare facility. Currently the LFG is being flared and CERs are being issued based on the monitoring and reporting of the LFG collection and flare operation. Electric generation both for the sites to use as well as for export to the local grid is planned for 2009.

The case study reviews; data collection and reporting, project registration and approval, verification and certification, CDM requirements and additionality, quality assurance/quality control and equipment.
