Storrington Storms abated by Black & Veatch/Costain

The joint venture between Black & Veatch and Costain has completed a £3.8M environmental improvement scheme in the West Sussex village of Storrington (population 7,100).

Storrington's WWTW has been upgraded to remove the risk of wastewater flooding on site, which occurred during heavy rainfall because the undersized pipes to the treatment works could not cope with excess water.

Working to meet an enhanced effluent consent and the storm tank requirements of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, the upgrade included new screens and inlet pumping. Also installed were three continuous backwashed sand filters, which provide an extra level of treatment to the village's wastewater before it is released into the local watercourse.

The work undertaken by Black & Veatch and Costain saw the preparation of environmental documentation and the obtaining of planning permission. Also provided was design moderation through value management, value engineering, HAZOP studies, formal design and health & safety reviews.
