Southern Water CSO targets met by Black & Veatch and Costain

Within budget and in time to meet important consent compliance deadlines, the joint venture between Black & Veatch and Costain has completed a total of 36 CSO-related (combined sewage overflow) schemes for Southern Water.

Each scheme underwent a vigorous management and value engineering exercise to drive construction costs down. By providing innovative storage solutions which avoided the upgrading of existing pumping stations, a saving of £2M was made on the target cost.

Set demanding completion dates, often requiring completion less than 12 months from conceptual brief, Southern Water's needs meant that every CSO had to meet National Standards for pass-forward flow rates, storage, power supplies, telemetry, plant availability and mechanical screening.

Covering sites across Sussex and Hampshire, the work undertaken by Black & Veatch and Costain included:

Programme and project management, feasibility study, and construction, commissioning and documentation of a fully operational plant.
