Rapid construction of WTW buildings using bespoke precast panels
Chingford South WTW. Milton Precast has been awarded a £32k contract by M J Gleeson to produce bespoke precast concrete wall panels for the construction of the interiors of four new buildings at Thames Water's new Chingford South WTW.
The buildings - a Washwater recovery building; High and Low-Lift pump buildings and an Ozone treatment facility - are of steel-frame construction springing from a reinforced concrete substructure. Gleeson's design partner MWH designed the low level interior skin of the walls from reinforced concrete panels which could be installed in conveniently-sized sections between the vertical and horizontal steel members of the buildings' superstructure.
Milton produced a total of 64 panels, 2.28m high and in various specified widths between 0.7 m and 5 m. Cast-in bespoke fixings (cleats at the top, threaded sockets to take threaded dowel bars at the base) enable the panels to be installed more rapidly without specialist equipment. This allowed the rapid construction of a weatherproof interior for following internal trades. The final external block-work skin will be installed on completion of the process equipment.
The panels are an example of Milton Precast's specialist services. The company works closely with contractors, builders' merchants and developers to develop and manufacture bespoke precast units to meet specific requirements.
