The risks of Occupational Asthma from cleaning in the workplace
Recent research in the academic journal Thorax, has revealed that there are many asthma cases that develop in adults over the age of 50 in the UK as a result of exposure to substances at work.
HSE figures show 1500 new cases of work-related asthma each year although many of these are from exposure from years before, so these are significant numbers of workers developing ill health.
There are various substances, called respiratory sensitizers that have the potential to cause asthma. They include isocyanates and other chemicals as well as fine dust particles, e.g. from wood dust, flour or grain. It also includes substances such as detergents, a common product used in cleaning activities, both at home and at work. These are often overlooked as they are used so frequently, they are readily available in large quantities, and we often use them without much thought.
In general, occupational asthma is under reported and considered little by employers as a risk yet it causes debilitating lung disease. However occupational asthma is entirely preventable through good and cost effective occupational hygiene measures, i.e. preventing or controlling exposure to hazardous substances.
For the original research see Thorax website, document - Thorax2013;68:365-371 doi:10.1136/thoraxjnl-2012-202151.
