University and Government work together on climate change adaption

Cranfield University's Risk Centre is playing an important research role for the UK Government in implementing the risk assessment legislation within the Climate Change Act.

The Climate Change Act 2008 introduced the Adaptation Reporting Power which allows Government to ask public sector organisations, and statutory undertakers (such as water companies and electricity distributors) to report on their assessment of the risks climate change poses to them, and their proposals for adapting to climate change.

Cranfield will lead a research project designed to ensure the adaption reports are consistent with the Government's strategy for the Reporting Power.

Led by Dr Gillian Drew, Cranfield's Risk Centre will be working with Defra's Adapting to Climate Change team to evaluate the risk assessments of every Adaptation Report received, resulting in a comprehensive report synthesising the current risks and identifying key themes, gaps or recurrent dependencies emerging from the research for a range of sectors, as well as the identification of priority areas for further research.

The research will not only provide insights into organisational and sectoral climate change risks and preparedness, but will contribute to the Government's strategy for the future use of the Adaptation Reporting Power strategy.
