Field based testing of heavy metals becomes a reality
Developed and manufactured in the UK, the Metalyser HM1000 has been designed to allow users to obtain rapid and accurate on-site data on concentrations of heavy meals in water. From the intuitive user interface on the portable handset, right through to the combined sampling and analysis procedures, the Metalyser has been designed around simplicity of use and practicality for the user.
Heavy metals in water are toxic but cannot be detected by odour, taste or colour. Traditional detection methods require a fixed site laboratory using highly advanced and expensive analytical instruments. Against the backdrop of an ever increasing need to control contamination of the world's limited potable water supplies, the need for the analysis of toxic metals and the subsequent immediate identification of problems is a crucial phase in effective water management practices.
Based on the accepted electrochemical method of Anodic Stripping Voltammetry, the Metalyser measures arsenic, mercury, cadmium, lead and copper down to concentrations below 5ppb. The Metalyser will not only analyse samples, record temperature and store data on the handset, but the instrument will also display a graph allowing the user to see the results visually.
The submersible probe, which houses the electrodes, acts as both an in-situ sampling device and analysis cell. This unique feature means that the user can lower the probes into the water via the 2 metre cable, collect the sample and undertake the analysis all in the integral beaker. The Metalyser uses tried and tested technology that is renowned for being sensitive and specific in its analysis.
The instrument is already proving popular with customers worldwide who are beginning to truly realise the benefits of being able to measure heavy metals directly in the field.
