Sonix(TM) - turning up the gas!

Like all the major water companies, Severn Trent is facing increasing energy costs and looking to derive more energy from biogas and CHP. As part of its strategy, process engineers Purac are to supply a major Sonix(TM) installation for the £2.5 million PE Minworth site.

The Sonix(TM) plant will treat some 1000 3/day of surplus activated sludge, enhancing the downstream digestion and resulting in increased gas production and solids destruction. The resulting additional biogas will add to the already significant levels of green energy generated from this site and help reduce the burden of Biosolids disposal.

Severn Trent first trialed sonix at its Mansfield site in 2003, proving its performance, but the recent energy price hikes have really moved the agenda forward significantly. Severn Trent and other utility companies are also looking at other CHP sites where Sonix could be applied.

Purac's Biosolids Manager Fergus Rooksby said: "This is a great endorsement for Sonix(TM) by one of the original sponsors of the technology. It's a powerful recognition of Sonix(TM)'s ability to maximize energy recovery from Biosolids. Up until now, most of the take up of Sonix(TM) technology has been from overseas. This significant project in the UK comes at a time when energy costs are forefront in the minds of many in the industry and, when the subject of renewables is becoming increasingly newsworthy."

Sonix(TM) full scale installations are currently running successfully in Scandinavia, Spain, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia.
