North Yorkshire firm has water treatment works contracts covered

A new contract for Cumwhinton water treatment works near Carlisle is the latest in a series of orders for special water tank covers completed by Thirsk-based Power Plastics.

The project, in association with Biwater and United Utilities, called for not one but nine separate covers for the works' new lamella clarifier tanks.

The rules governing the treatment of drinking water are very strict and regular manual inspection of these tanks to make sure they are functioning correctly forms part of the stringent procedures laid down.

The newly installed roll-away covers are designed for safe operation by one employee, with no extra equipment needed.

They have a rigid frame and a central winch mechanism which winches down 2 PVC-coated polypropylene covers to leave the tank open for personnel. This latest version of the Power Plastics tank covers features an improved gearing mechanism for the rollers to make uncovering and recovering the tanks simpler than ever.

The covers themselves are the largest the company has ever produced at 4.5m x 7m, although much larger sizes are possible.

This latest tank cover project comes hard on the heels of orders from Birse Construction, who commissioned covers for North West Water's Hodder treatment works at Clitheroe in Lancashire (which provides all the water for the population of Liverpool) and Brightwater Engineering, who did the same for Norfolk's Hepnall works on behalf of Anglia Water.

Power Plastics Managing Director Andy Beetles said: "The mandatory inspection need exists for water companies all over the UK, and our easy-to-operate, tailor-made covers seem to be attracting a lot of interest from many of them."
