Hitting the green campaign trail

The Oscar winning film of the future is a creative master piece - oh and it just happens to be carbon neutral. The prospect of high budget art attaching its bandwagon to the green agenda may have moved a step closer thanks to an ERM carbon calculator which has been used to create the first carbon neutral advertising campaign.

The ERM tool was developed for The Brooklyn Brothers, a New York creative agency which set out to make a difference by offsetting total carbon emissions from an advertising campaign for its cable company client Comcast. In developing the package "ERM took into account every step of production," explained the agency's co-founder Guy Barnett. "This extended from the flights we took to the amount of materials we used for props to the power used by our editors."

Travel, production vehicles, generators, lighting, film processing and computer power all went into the mix - the result, according to the ERM calculator, being 8.9 tonnes of carbon emissions from a 15 ad campaign. Brooklyn Brothers then paid $180 to offset the entire production.

"There is no reason why this approach shouldn't be extended to full length feature films," commented ERM consultant Yianni Chysostomidis who developed the calculator. "Not only is it a means of offsetting carbon emissions but it can also be used in pre-production as a basis for improving resource efficiency and reducing energy costs right across the operation."

ERM's global climate change team is continuing to work with The Brooklyn Brothers and other media clients, including the BBC, on options for carbon offsetting, reducing carbon emissions and various other aspects of energy management and energy efficiency.
