Collecting Litter On Britains Rivers

The Problem

There are tens of thousands of miles of non-navigable waterways in the UK, many of which are polluted with litter, sewage and chemicals. This causes problems, especially when people carelessly dispose of litter and substances that are toxic, even in most cases fatal to the wildlife and vegetation. The problems come in the form of the local wildlife, unsightly vies and causes low public amenity.

The Solution

The 'Litter Trap' is designed so that these particulates are able to liberally flow through an open meshed basket. This means that the overall structure is hardly affected. The 'Litter Trap' works by using floating flexible deflection booms fixed upstream using sliding rails. This means that during the change of water levels the boom level changes with it, allowing the boom to continuously work. The 'Litter Trap' and frame work is constructed out of a rugged steel construction that has been fully hot dip galvanize for long life in the marine environment. The trap is sited inside a floating pontoon that is fitted into position by six metre long pilings. The pontoon is made up of two plastic floats containing marine grade polyurethane foam. On a regular basis the trap is hoisted from the river onto a fixed platform on the river bank. From here the contents can be emptied into a skip where it can go for sorting or landfill.

The following images illustrate a project on the River Darwen in Blackburn which was a joint initiative with Blackburn Council the Environment Agency and the Merseyside Basin Campaign who have been battling with problems with debris collection in the River for many years.

In the event of an oil or chemical spill the 'Litter Traps' boom configuration will serve to deflect the oil or chemical substance into the trap. An oil skimmer or sorbents could then be set up to quickly and easily remove any of the contaminants.
