Randalls waste compactor for offshore energy recovery

Randalls Fabrications has supplied a giant-sized Simpak 5000 static waste compactor to Enviroco Ltd. to help deal with waste collected as part of an integrated waste contract, recently won from a major international North Sea oil producer.

The contract (three years and two one-year options) covers the management of all the waste generated by offshore installations as well as waste from the company's office premises in Aberdeen. Enviroco specialises in alternatives to landfill and will be recycling over 90% of all waste collected, both by conventional recycling and by transferring compacted waste to the Shetland Islands Energy Recovery plant, where it will be used to fuel a furnace generating hot water for the Lerwick District Heating Scheme.

One of a comprehensive range of Randalls compactors, the Simpak 5000 has a large-capacity charge box and hopper and a 22 Kw motor driving up to a nominal 177 cubic metres an hour, at a compaction force of 45,600 Kgf. The machine's hydraulic power pack is a separate, easily-maintained unit designed for rapid cycling and reliability. The power pack also incorporates the main isolator, key switch isolator, emergency stop, start and warning indicators.

Enviroco's Simpak 5000 compactor is located at the company's Aberdeen site. Offshore waste is delivered to the quayside by the oil company's supply vessels and then transported by road to Aberdeen. Office waste is collected by road. All waste is sorted to remove recyclable materials such as plastics, rubber, paper, timber cardboard and metal and the remainder lifted by grab into the compactor. This fills approximately twice a week, producing a total of around 30 tonnes of compacted waste that is then shipped to the Shetland Islands.

The Energy Recovery Plant became operational in 1999 and currently supplies heating and domestic hot water to over 300 households in Lerwick, as well as schools, a hospital and a variety of public and commercial premises.

Enviroco Ltd. has centres in Peterhead and Aberdeen and specialises in the management of waste by re-use, recycling and minimisation.

Randalls Fabrications Limited, of Pontefract, is a member of the Derby-based Ramshorn Group, a privately-owned limited company which also includes Skip Units, Castle Containers and Waste Equipment Rentals.
