Biwater And Cascal Nominated For 2010 Global Water Awards
Both Biwater and Cascal have been nominated for this year's Global Water Awards that will be announced at an industry awards ceremony to be held in April.
Each company has been chosen from a long list of contenders and is now in the top four in its category. Public voting has now started to decide the winner for each category and we would like to ask for your vote to help us to win this coveted award.
Cascal is listed in the Water Company of the Year category that highlights water companies that have made the most significant contribution to the development of the international water sector during 2009 and Biwater's Managua Solar Sludge Drying Facility in Nicaragua is nominated for the Environmental Contribution of the Year award for projects that have made the greatest contribution to protecting or improving the natural environment.
The Managua Solar Sludge Drying Facility is the worlds largest installation of its kind and is a greenhouse based solar sludge drying facility built by Biwater International to process the sewage sludge to a high quality from a population equivalent of one million. Biwater had previously constructed the Managua Wastewater Treatment Plant which now treats Managua's wastewater to a high quality before discharging it into Lake Managua which was previously very polluted.
The solar sludge drying facility is a low cost, low energy system which is set to provide developing countries with an important alternative to a process which is traditionally very energy intensive. The sludge drying equipment was supplied by IST Anlagenbau GmbH and was funded by the German development bank KfW.
Cascal is a NYSE listed water and wastewater service provider serving 4.7 million people in eight countries around the world. In 2009 equity investors bought into Cascal and its stock outperformed the major water indices by rising 35% during the year. 2009 was a successful year for Cascal as its Bournemouth & West Hampshire Water company was ranked number one out of all UK water companies for overall performance in Ofwat's annual Service and Delivery Assessment report.
In addition, Cascal's South African operations were awarded Blue Drop status by the Department of Environment and Water Affairs for their provision of high quality water services. The blue drop status was only achieved by 5% of the country's water networks. Cascal also furthered its ambitions in the desalination market with the acquisition of three Caribbean businesses in December 2009.
