'New For Old' Dust Analyser Deal Brings 96.66% Data Capture Rates to NE Lincs

With the UK's largest port and the industrial town of Grimsby in its jurisdiction, air quality monitoring is a primary concern for North East Lincolnshire Borough Council.

When DEFRA reported that the TEOM dust analysers the council relied on weren't up to standard, rapid action was required and Enviro Technology (ET) stepped in with its BAM 1020s.

North East Lincolnshire is the proud home of Port Immingham, the UK's largest and busiest port. The deep waters of the Humber estuary make the port ideal for dry bulk handling, and principal cargoes include coal and iron ore.

The council takes air quality very seriously and, like all UK local authorities, it has a legal obligation to monitor and report on pollution on a daily basis. When it comes to dust monitoring in North East Lincolnshire, there are three strategic locations where analysis occurs: two within the air quality monitoring area of Immingham and a third in the town of Grimsby.

Initially, TEOM dust analysers were used in all three locations. However, when it became clear that these did not meet EU First Daughter Directive equivalency requirements, Pollution Control Manager Danny Fox needed to act quickly. He decided to take advantage of Enviro Technology's 'new for old' part exchange deal and replace the equipment with three BAM 1020s. One year on, Fox claims that the BAMs have brought cost-efficiencies as well as improved reliability.

"In the first 12 months using the BAM 1020s we have received an unprecedented 96.66 per cent of validated data," Fox explains. "The only downtime occurs when you are changing the filter - approximately twenty minutes every six to seven weeks."

The main benefit of the BAM 1020 is that when a new filter is installed it confirms immediately whether the set-up is successful. With TEOMs, there is a four-stage post-change set-up which takes in excess of one hour. "It was not uncommon for staff to have to return to the site several times before the equipment was running satisfactorily, meaning that data was lost," says Fox.

In addition to the better reliability, the pollution control team in North East Lincolnshire found that BAM 1020s were more robust and durable. Dust is collected on a roll of filter paper, whereas TEOMs incorporate an expensive glass tube which can easily be broken and costs around £2000 to replace.

Maintenance is also less frequent with BAM 1020s as the filter roll generally needs to be replaced only once every six to seven weeks. The TEOM system has one static filter continually loading with dust, and the council found that in several areas this needed to be changed fortnightly.

Small and compact, the BAM-1020 Beta Attenuation Mass Monitor has been manufactured using a time-proven design, offering users the highest level of reliability and performance. The design ensures low maintenance and servicing costs, as well as minimum manpower requirements for its routine operation.
