CSG Boosts Renewable Energy Credentials With Anglian Water

The Castings Services Group's new Process and Actuation Division is delighted to be working with GTM (Galliford Try & Imtech Process) on Anglian Water special projects. The new venture will allow CSG to significantly boost their sustainability credentials, and involves specifying and supplying the complete scope of valves for two Anglian Water projects with a combined value of £320,000.

The two installations will enhance the Advanced Anaerobic Digestion (AAD) facilities at both Basildon and Cliff Quay Sewage Works in Essex, with the objectives of increasing capacity to meet growing population demands and effluent standards criteria.

Anaerobic Digestion is the breakdown of organic materials by natural bacteria to produce biogas from waste biodegradable materials, such as agricultural manure, slurry, food waste and sewage sludge. The process has become a very well established treatment technology in the UK.

Advanced Anaerobic Digestion takes this process one stage further, and significantly enhances the benefits of anaerobic digestion by separating and optimizing the key process stages used in more conventional digestion systems.

Work at the Anglian Water's Basildon plant, an established wastewater works since the 1950's is now complete, and will benefit from their AAD system by capitalizing upon the generation of gas for renewable energy such as electricity, boosting its sustainability.

CSG has supplied valves for all parts of the AAD process including: robust knife valves designed to cope with for the raw dense waste; eccentric plug valves which manage the flow through the pipes; through to butterfly valves which will effectively adjust levels of gas.

As a result of the successful installation at Basildon, CSG has been awarded a further installation for another Anglian Water project for AAD at Cliff Quay Sewage Works near Ipswich due to commence in the coming weeks.

Dave Warner, Divisional Manager of CSG's Process Valve and Actuation Division commented:

" At CSG we wholly support new technologies designed to promote renewable energies, AAD offers not only a waste treatment solution but one that delivers a significant energy source and a reduction in sludge volumes. We believe supplying our products to renewable energy projects such as Anglia's will be a big growth area for our business moving forward."
