Another Prestigious Job For CSG

International valve specialists Castings Services Group (CSG) have recently started production on a range of bespoke valves for the prestigious Crossness Treatment Works.

The works, being carried out by Tamesis, include the refurbishment of the High Lift Pumping Station where CSG are providing 31 Short Pattern Gate Valves ranging in size from 700mm to 900mm. The valves make up part of the £400M Thames Water scheme which aims to improve treatment capabilities by 44% and vastly reduce any storm sewage that overflows in to the River Thames.

CSG carry extensive stocks of valves up to 900mm with standard flange drillings but, due to the age of the original Pumping Station and the additional works carried out over the years, there was a wide variety of flange drillings and face to face dimensions within the system.

Our highly qualified Technical Team provide an excellent service and worked closely with the client to produce a bespoke valve for each position in the line. They also worked with Engineers to discuss site conditions and designs in order to get optimum results from the system. This, combined with the flexibility of our foundry, resulted in a range of valves combining various features such as Table D and PN16 Flanges, Channel Guides and Slippers for Horizontal Mounting, Short and Long Pattern Bodies as well as Limit Switches and Hydraulic Actuators.

The new valves will enable Thames Water to isolate the pumps on both the inbound and outbound lines for routine maintenance and allow for storm waters to be redirected in cases of heavy rainfall, in turn protecting the sensitive marshlands on the eastern boundary of the site.

As you can imagine, all of the staff at CSG are extremely proud to be involved in this project especially in view of the connection to the original Crossness Pumping Station. Built by Sir Joseph Bazalgette, the father of Civil Engineers, Crossness Pumping Station is undoubtedly an engineering marvel particularly when you consider that it was built back in 1865.

Crossness can now be added to our list of recent projects which includes the following schemes.....

Davyhulme WWTW - CSG supplied a number of 150mm Butterfly Valves complete with direct mounted electronic spring return actuators which cause the valves to slam to shut in case of loss of current. The valves also had to comply with ATEX II 2 G EEX D II CT4.

Five Fords WWTW - CSG supplied a large quantity of Small Bore Gate Valves and Non-Return Valves ranging from 100mm to 250mm as part of the AMP3 improvement programme. The improvements formed part of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water's strategy to achieve 100% compliance with consent standards across the asset base.

Belfast Sewer - Originally installed during Victorian times the sewer system has been updated to reduce flood risk at a cost of £120M and encompasses over 10km of pipeline. It has won a number of awards for innovation and is the largest development project ever undertaken in Belfast. The following were supplied by CSG and installed within the system:- 6 x 1200mm Gate Valves with Rotork Actuators, 2 x 700mm Non-Return Valves with Bypass, 2 x 700 Gate Valve with Rotork Actuators, 2 x 700 Gate Valve with Manual Gearbox, 2 x 250mm Gate Valve with Rotork Actuators.
